The Family Camp Post

I saw this comic on Father's Day and just loved it.

As has become our tradition, we went to family camp and consider this our reset for the year and the kickoff to the summer.  For different reasons - partly swim team for me and partly work for Jeff - we came into it rather stressed and stretched thin and had a hard time soaking in the rest and rejuvenation we needed until Wednesday or Thursday.  That was disappointing.  We'll try to change that for next year.

Also, we discovered my camera was broken when we got to camp, so we have less pictures than usual.  I almost forgot, Jeff smashed his phone on a mountain bike ride partway through the week, so he wasn't taking any pictures, either.  And, the pictures are all mixed up since they came from different sources.  But, here they are, and we hope you enjoy them.  I'm enjoying them, too, because the stress of the memories has faded away and only the enjoyment remains!
The wonderful camp photographer took these of our family.  If this were a sending year and you were on our Christmas card list, you'd be receiving one.  However, we're taking this year off of sending Christmas cards, so digital images will have to do!

Hikes in the woods near the creek are delightful and peaceful.

Love him!

A camp photographer captured this one as we walked down to the train.  As you can see, our dear friends, Ryan and Ashley - and their kids - came with us again this year.  We're happy to say that they're signed up for next year, too!

Our new friends Devin and Cameron and their kids were there, too, and we enjoyed getting to know them better.

This is the first year that we have had a spider problem, and I was a bit traumatized by it.  We killed 2-3 of these giants daily in our little cabin.  I have nothing good to say about it.

Seven of the nine kids who spent a lot of the week hanging out together!

They're cute, and they get along well together!  Each kid doesn't have a counterpart in the other family since we have three kids and Ryan and Ashley have four, but they still get along really, really well.

Here we are on our way to camp!

Our kids and Ryan and Ashley's kids at a typical meal.

Since there was SO much rain this year, the poison oak was very happy.  We had never been too concerned about it in years past, but this year, we all learned to identify it and avoid it.

The kids developed a habit of eating like this in the dining hall:  Our kids, Ryan and Ashley's kids minus their youngest, and Devin and Cameron's kids.  Sometimes Ryan and Ashley's youngest ate with us at the adult table, and sometimes Jonathan did.  It worked great, but we missed eating with our family of five and made a point to do it more at the end of the week.

Walking down to the train!

Train day is a great day to see Dave and Jen and their girls.  We're so thankful they suggested family camp in the first place and have enjoyed all the memories we've made with them there.

Ella and Dave are so cute, right?

This year, the weather was cool, and rather that spending time on the beach or at the boardwalk, we decided to have lunch and spend time on the pier.

Here we're visiting the seals.

We had lunch at this restaurant.  Jonathan is a big fan of clam chowder, so he was very happy.

Love these three.

One more thing that we did differently this year:  We rode indoors on a car with cushioned seats on the way back.  We loved it.

One more camp photographer pic of the walk to the train.

The skits are always crowd pleasers and kid pleasers.

Our cabin overlooked the field, and I enjoyed watching the kids.

We enjoyed archery as a family this year, too.

The Middle of June

Our good friend, Matt, came to visit us for one night, and we all enjoyed his company.

He has been spending his nights in this contraption perched atop his Honda.  We all thought it was amazing.

Jeff finally got serious about buying a sun hat to wear at swim meets.  I hope he'll wear it at other times, too.  All the cool dads wear them!

Jonathan built his own version of Angry Kitty.

Those magnet letters still come in handy!

Jonathan's start of a Lego band

Our kids and Ryan and Ashley's kids really enjoy each other.

The Lego band continued to grow!

Sometimes you wake up and your hair is just awesome.  Especially if you went swimming right before bedtime.

And sometimes the hot pads remind you of frogs!

Jumping Into June

(It's October and I'm blogging June, so my titles are very uninspired/uninspiring.  Moving right along...)
A talented friend of ours designed these T-shirts and I had to send for one for this tomato lover.  Isn't it cool?  And, isn't it sad that he *thinks* he doesn't love tomatoes anymore?  Sigh...

Jonathan's buddy had a birthday/graduation party, and we got some fun pictures at her party at the park.

I love this one.

I can't remember what was wrong, but clearly he wasn't feeling well.  Thankfully, the kids don't get sick often, and when they do, it doesn't last long.  We're thankful for our chiropractor who helps keep us healthy.

Grace kept on wearing those glasses from her 2nd grade performance, and since there was a rare moment when I was on the couch, she decided to braid my hair.

How to enjoy Barnes and Noble.

Again - not feeling so hot.

Swimming in April, May, and June

We tackled something completely new to us this spring:  We put the kids on a swim team.  Their swimming lesson instructors had suggested it last summer, and we investigated it for awhile, and decided to jump in (pun intended.)  If you know us at all, you probably have noticed that competitive/team sports are not a thing for our family, so swim team involved a huge learning curve for all of us - especially me.  And if you've read the posts about a stressful May, I should explain that an unprecedented number of school programs and head lice contributed greatly to the stress, but so did swim team.  Between the programs and swim practices, it seemed we had a commitment every afternoon.  We are a family that prefers to spend most afternoons/evenings at home, so this was a drastic change for us.

Anyway, here are the kids on their first day of swim team.  We got to try it out for a couple of weeks before committing.  I knew it was going to be very difficult for me personally since I was the one in charge of getting the kids to practices and sitting through them as well.  Nevertheless, Jeff and I decide to commit.

We weren't really sure whether Benjamin would fulfill the requirement of being able to swim across the pool unassisted.  But, by the time the kids were tested on this skill, he did.  I was proud of how hard all three kids worked and how determined they were.  All three learned a lot of swimming skills that they wouldn't have learned otherwise.  The change was dramatic in all three kids, but especially Benjamin.

Grace is here with her best buddy and the best buddy's cousin.

Popsicles were for sale once a week after practice.  Those were our favorite days, of course.  More posts about swim team in June and July coming soon!

WE MADE IT THROUGH MAY!

We did it.  We survived May.  I don't think I've ever had a May that stretched me that thinly.  Usually that's a job for Decembers.  Here are some random pics from the end of the month.

Jonathan loves guitar, and I don't think I blogged about it, but our neighbors handed down an old electric guitar to him.  What a gift!!!  I love when he and Jeff play together.

These two are interested in the piano.  I'm going to try to get Grace started first and then Benjamin.  Finding the discipline to make this happen consistently is tricky.

Kit went camping using the amazing tent that Doreen made for Grace.

The kids had been wanting to try the caramel popcorn at Target, so that was the first item we achieved from our summer bucket list.  Have you ever checked out the calorie count?  Oh, MY!  I unwisely chose the large, thinking that it would be a good size for the three of us to split.  It was huge!  We had leftovers for a couple more snack sessions after we got home!

Taking in a dollar movie with some favorite little buddies is a great way to kick off summer break!
